악당의 파괴적 불시착
빌런 워너비의 자기 항변 “Bank Robber”
가수의 이름은 ‘악당(villain)’이고 앨범의 이름은 “은행강도(Bank Robber)’다. 전면에 박혀 있는 두 단어만 놓고 보면 갱스터 뮤지션이 따로 없다. 플라네타리움 레코드의 주역으로 성장하고 있는 R&B 싱어송라이터 빌런은 6곡 EP 형태로 꾸려진 이번 앨범 ”Bank Robber“를 통해 악당을 표방하는 이유에 대해 이야기한다.
이번 앨범은 윌스미스 주연의 이색 히어로 무비 “핸콕”에서 전체적인 영감을 얻어 만들었다. 영화 속 핸콕은 위험에 처한 사람들을 도와주는 슈퍼 히어로지만 과격하고 예측 불가능한 행동으로 인해 사람들의 기피 대상이 된다. 경멸 받는 악당 히어로, 미움 받는 밉상 영웅이다.
이 영화에서처럼 악당에게도 영웅에게도 양면은 존재한다. 세상이 원하는 바른 모습으로 스스로를 표현한다고 모두 선한 의도가 담기지 않고, 세상이 원치 않는 삐딱한 모습으로 스스로를 표현한다고 모두 악한 의도가 담기진 않는다.
악당 워너비로 인식되는 빌런의 행보는 후자에 해당한다. 핸콕이 그랬듯 파괴적이고 원초적인 모습으로 대중에게 인식되지만, 악한 의도를 담는 것이 아닌 그저 길들여지지 않은 자신의 언어로 이야기할 뿐이다. 파괴적이고 여파가 남는 불시착. 빌런은 그렇게 자신의 음악적 자유로움을 핸콕에 투영했다.
음악적인 면에서 두드러지는 점은 일단 전 곡의 작사, 작곡, 편곡을 직접 했다는 점. 싱어송라이터로서의 탁월한 능력은 이미 이전 곡들에서부터 누누이 확인해 온 바다. 유려한 랩 실력을 자랑하는 장기를 십분 살려 힙합과 R&B의 중간 선에 자리한 음악을 보여주고 있다는 점도 특징적이다.
첫 곡 ‘구해’는 불시착의 시작이다. 거칠게 내뱉는 단어들이 삐딱해 보이지만 결국 세상을 구해야 한다고 외친다. 세상을 불신하는 악당이지만 동시에 그 세상을 구하려 드는 이중적인 사고를 1분 20초의 짧은 시간 안에 담았다.
‘마니또’는 힙합 스타일의 비트가 어둡고 공격적이지만, 역설적으로 담고 있는 내용은 착하다. 누군가에게 악당임과 동시에 다른 누군가에게는 마니또 같은 존재라는 따뜻한 내용을 담고 있다.
‘Luhvin It’은 악당이 슈퍼스타가 되었을 때 어떤 생활에 둘러싸일지를 상상하며 만들었다. 영어 가사가 반복되는 비트에 얹어지며 묘한 중독성을 전한다. 영화 “베테랑”의 조태오 캐릭터가 영감을 주었다고 한다.
‘핸콕’에는 빌런 스스로의 자전적인 이야기를 담았다. 유려한 멜로디에 자신의 넋두리를 부드럽게 쏟아내는 빌런 특유의 매력이 잘 표현되었다.
‘밉상’은 이전 활동에서도 보여준 적 없었던 완전한 발라드 곡이다. 이번 앨범에 담긴 유일한 러브송이기도 하다. 건반 반주 하나에 맞춰서 격정적인 감정을 두텁게 쏟아냈다. 다음 발라드 행보에 대한 기대를 모으게 만든다.
마지막 곡인 ‘요정’은 지난해 발매했던 싱글의 리믹스 버전이다. 원곡은 스위트한 가사를 담고 있지만 이번 앨범에 담긴 리믹스 버전은 악당의 무심하고 심드렁한 사랑을 시니컬하게 표현했다.
‘악당’을 좋아하는 어린 싱어송라이터. 그가 왜 악당에 집착하는지는 중요하지 않다. 단지 의도와 의지가 느껴질 뿐이다. 내가 그린 세상에서 내가 되어 살아가길 원한다는 의도와 의지 말이다. (글/대중음악 평론가 이용지)

2. Exchange/Refund
- Exchange/refund request can be registered through email within 7 days after delivery.
- The round-trip shipping rate is charged to the customer for exchange/refund due to customer’s private reasons.
- If refund is approved after request, then we will guide you in regard to the refund charge and round-trip delivery fees.
- If the product is different from our description/advertisement on the page, or you are eligible for exchange/refund due to product malfunction or wrong delivery, then the shipping rate for refund/exchange will be paid by our company.

3. Cases when refund is not possible

4. Delivery Information
